Abstract: In order to explore the possibility of enhancing the lateral stability of vehicle by applying inerter to suspension, two different inerterspringdamper (ISD) suspension structures are studied. A seven DOF dynamics model for a car is built, and on the basis of an analysis on the lateral stability of vehicle and taking the typical fishhook steering input as test condition, an optimization on the element parameters of ISD suspension is conducted by using multiple population genetic algorithm with the peak value of time domain response of car body roll angle as optimization indicator, and the results of optimization are simulated. The results show that the peak values of car body roll angle of the vehicle with S1 and S2 ISD suspensions are significantly suppressed, improving by 386% and 486% respectively at different vehicle speeds compared with conventional passive suspension. And comparatively S2 suspension has more significant enhancement in vehicle lateral stability than S1 one so is more suitable for use in vehicle.
